Thursday, October 16 2008.

The end of the year didn't see St. Andrew's Junior College being hit by an earthquake but a violent eruption of joy and pride as a group of musically inclined individuals emerged with victorious results, soaring beyond all possible Richter scales.

These students after being highly demoralised with effect of the annual Common Test, brushed aside their self-empathy and rose on their feet. Now they hold their heads high with no less than A's and B's for the 2008 J1 Promotional Examinations, sustaining the legacy left behind especially by senior graduate Nicole Oh who scored a sweet 90 points in the GCE A Levels.

When interviewed, part time pastor/ proud ex section leader, Jeremy Tan cited "Praise the Lord" while James Wong suggested "We study with them what.. No wonder" while a mysterious freckled senior could not stop yelling hysterically "WOOOHOOOO OWNAGE!!!!!!!!!"

Nonetheless, these young individuals named Joel Cheong, Yi Ling and Belinda deserve an ovation for nothing less than a magnificent clean sweep.

hello hello this is farah(:

i wanted to thank the j1s for a great band dinner,
especially to the creative directors adilah and grace,
and to my lovely horn section juniors!

you guys must be exhausted from all the meetings
rushing here and there for deco, doorgifts, music, games yadayada
amidst the tide of schoolwork, assignments and such.
everything's really so appreciated!
i loved the choice of music especially artic monkeys, panic at the disco and ok go,
the dance from the 3 dancing queens. (super cute!)
and the concept of the mugger kit!
okay, here are some photos!

now that there's a sense of closure to my stay in sajc band,
i really want to encourage my batchmates to study really hard
cos we'll be out of sajc in 2 months!

to the j1s,
the stress will pass,
promos will pass,
late night syf practices will pass,

Hey everyone! This is the ever popular Pastor Tan here. :D

The band dinner held on the 8th of August 2008 at M Hotel was probably the last official band event that we'd ever take part in and yes, it was really a memorable and even emotional night for us. Kudos to the JC1s for making it all happen.

Anyway I'd like to take a moment to reiterate and add to what Mr Glosz spoke about towards the end of the dinner. Our 2 years in this band has really been about the nurturing and building of friendships (and relationships for some) through our common passion for music. Throughout this time, we've gone through thick and thin together and the success that we've had is testament to the bonds and teamwork present in our batch. I will miss those times.

During band dinner, the gifts that were exchanged, pictures that were taken and dedications that were made reflected how much each of us are going to miss and cherish this band. Leaving will be tough.

I'd like to thank those who put in the effort to prepare a momento for me to encapsulate my memories. I do appreciate it a lot and must apologise for failing to do something similar for you guys; never really been good at such things. However, there is another reason why I did not prepare anything. It wasn't because, being a freeloader, I was trying to be some kind of stingy bastard :P, but simply because I rather not treat this as goodbye.

Having gone through so much together, let us continue to keep in touch and even have regular batch meetings for many years to come. It would be too great a waste if we didn't. The bonds that we have forged deserve to live past its superficial 2 year shelf life and it is my sincere hope that together, we can make this last.

hey people, well i'm here to blog a little on open house today. :) well i must say that i was quite impress with the sound of the band today, it was much more blended and sa-like. haha especially since you guys were up early to prepare for open house and performing even though you guys had FW the night before and a whole week of practicing! so give yourself a pat on the back yo, for perservering with open house. though i didnt get to stay for the second performance, i can feel that it was going to be much much better from the run through before it. i hope you guys see today as a learning point, and really push for musical excellence. you bunch surely have that in you all you need to do is just realise it, go for it and have the attitude of always wanting to improve! you already showed it today during the rehearsal before the second performance. i hope this serves as an encouragement for you guys to carry on the journey ahead and succeed! so see you people at band dinner on friday! :)

Hello J2s and J1s, CDs (Grace and Adilah) of 2008 batch here. We just want to clarify some things about the band dinner theme here, so yeah sorry for all the misunderstandings.

Firstly, our band dinner is not Kiddy Palace (!!). Anyway, yes I know some have been told that it was some Kiddy Birthday thing, but that theme has been cancelled after some discussion during today's band practice so sorry for confusing all of you.

The theme of the band dinner is Alphabets, it's a pretty variable theme. Basically, you choose an adjective/noun which starts with the same letter as your name and you dress according to that. HOWEVER, that does not mean that you really do dress exactly like how your word chosen states. You dress according to how you interpet it. To illustrate my point, let me use Joel's name as an example.

Say Joel wants to use the word "Jovial" as the word to dress up as. To him, what makes him jovial and happy might be simple things, like finding 50 cents on the floor or whatnot. Because he interpets the word "jovial" as having connections to do with simplicity, he can dress up simply to suit the event. That's it, no need to be colourful and whatnot, no need to follow the assumptions of "jovial" (i.e. bright colours etc)

Don't come in costumes, this is not a COSTUME party, just dress accordingly to how you interpret your word.

As long your interpretation is valid and not obscene, and as long you can explain your theme and choice of dressing to us, it is fine. We're not asking for extravagance! Please do not come in funny funny costumes and outfits! And please come in something decent, no slippers and overly revealing clothing like plunging necklines and microshorts or something.

Also, please submit the words you guys want to dress up as and a short explaination as well as description as to what you are wearing (you can tell us verbally/sms/email/even write on paper) to us by Sunday next week, in this way we can filter and moderate the dressing and see if it is acceptable by hotel management and all.

If you need help in your choice of word and all, please look for either Adilah or I for advice and help. We will be glad to assist you in any way possible :)

HEY GUYS! haha i chanced upon this report on our concert( though it has been more than one month alr) on SAJC's Blog. you must be like huh, our sch got blog? since when?! haha so anyway just read and enjoy! :) so here it is, credits to SAJC's Blogger's Club.

"18th May 2008

The stage was set on a breezy Sunday evening at the Victoria Concert Hall for the much anticipated SAJC Band Production. Saints and a minority of other guests filed excitedly into the hall with bundles of flowers in their hands before the lights dimmed for the show. The band opened with the Festive Overture, setting the light-hearted, celebratory scene for the rest of the night with its perfect blend of rhythm and melodious flow.
The first address from Mr. David Anthony Glosz, SAJC’S band director since 1987, was a heart-warming welcome for SAJC’S band alumni and an introduction for the rest of us to the long history that Mr Glosz has had with many musically inclined Saints.
The J2 band members proceeded to steal the spotlight with their sterling performance of Whatsoever Things, delivering with admirable precision. Being their last time on stage with Mr. Glosz, the three-part piece was a fitting closure to their SAJC band careers, commencing with a mournful section almost echoing a melancholic feeling, followed by a strengthened mid-section as if validating their bright futures beyond SAJC Band and finally a third-section symbolizing tranquility.
Grace Koh from the Lower Woodwinds section has this to say “Knowing it was the last time we (J1s) would be playing with the Seniors, there was a tinge of sadness.”
Selections from West Side Story by the junior band members represented a “passing on of the baton” of sorts. This piece included many familiar excerpts such as “I feel pretty” and “Maria” from the musical.
Samantha Chua, former Band Majorette and current student from SJI IB was one of the many guests who gave two thumbs up to the overall performance of the Band “They played well.”

After a brief intermission, the audience was geared up for the second half- the musical. Muhd Shafiq Bin Rashid, Aaron Li, Phyllis Loe, Hayden Chong and Aaron Tau are just a few of the actors who deserve mention for their respective roles and comedic accolades, for they certainly provided much laughter with both the planned script and impromptu lines.
Although the Band moved further into the background during the musical, their precise playing could still be heard.
All in all, a brilliant effort by SAJC Band.

1) U can write one paragraph on the contributions u had made as a member of the band and the performances you had taken part in:
--40th Anniversary Navy Open House
--SYF 2007
--ASEAN Games Opening Ceremony
--5th Band Convention Opening Ceremony

2) For the 3 leaders and ALs, you can write one paragraph on your contributions as a leader or ex-co member

3) All CIPs u had done, eg Service Learning ,Band CIP at Kaki Bukit, any flag day should be in the same paragraph

i'm glad to say everyone from the horn section should be regaining
about 95% of movement by now.
and if so, we should be shedding skin
like a snake/a post-bali nicole oh.

i look like i have some sort of skin disease
with pink and black patches, plus tan lines!
james claims he has an indonesian flag.
i asked why,
and he says because there's all sorts of random shapes and sizes
(that doesn't make much sense)
heeee.

okay so here's more photos anyway
it's pretty much hilarious stuff.

so first,
it's sunblock tutorials from jeremy,
our section leader.
pray pay close attention.

first, apply JUST A TINY TEENY BIT OF sunblock
slightly below your right nostril,
where the incidence angle of the sun will heat that
relatively 2cm-long patch the most.

plus sunblock is really expensive you know,
even though it's farah's sunblock and it's free,
jeremy disapproves in free-riding these days.

oh and also,
don't bother to spread it,
or put a little more anywhere else.
just leave a clump of it at that precise spot.
alright you're ready to tan!

well apparently..
yi ling disagrees.
she pursues the concept of "the more, the better"
therefore,
apply as such
EVERYWHERE.
and you're off to go!

farah on the other hand,
belives in the traditional waikikomsijong sandbath,
for her fear of water means she'd much rather cover herself in sand,
while everyone takes a dip.

she might want to review her methods.

i think james and aaron doesn't really give a shit about everyone else. hahahaha.

that we should keep our body parts active while we tan
because active molecules stimulation will accelerate

it's really simple!
just lift your hands,

apart from achieving better blood flow,
the combination of 3 and 2,
is also really good fengshui for block tests.

After the orchard we went to fremantle market. Its like Bugis Street but of course cooler, and A LITTLE less squeezier. But bcos we went on a public holiday so it was quite packed. We had lunch at free expense. We went to their arcade too, HAHA. Even Australia have bengs and lians hanging out at arcades.

we bought some gummies and sweets at a candy shop (:

Day 6: We travelled from Perth to Albany.

we stopped at the Gap.

this is when paul dropped us at some ulu place and we had some photo taking session.

Day 8 : We stayed in Albany from day 6 to 8.

THIS IS THE KARMA LODGE WE STAYED IN. (: Double storey chalet. Mine's Serenity. We have serenity, tranquility, destiny, kismet, harmony and a few more which i can't rmb.

So Day 9 we went to macadamia nut factory, and, shopping at Harbourtown. I only took a photo of ONE macadamia tree cos batt was running low. And Day 10, we had last minute shopping in perth city. And flew back to Singapore.

I MUST SAY this trip has been a great experience together with my batch. Musically, we improved alot and we learned alot too. I mean, from the WAYO and the WASO concerts, i learnt alot. Not practically but in a sense, i learnt to enjoy music more than before. And i learnt to appreciate the Art of it too.

As a batch, i believed we have many unforgettable memories carried with us. thank you to the teachers who followed us and took care of us.

let's forget the bad and only remember the good.

Apparently what most of us in the section talks about now is how much our backs hurt, how we can't wear tee shirts and how much we love aloe vera. Haha well it was an enjoyable day of section bonding, dispite most of us getting "cooked" as a result. Whatever it is, it was still a happy and fun outing. Thanks to those who brought food for our picnic lunch, it was a nice meal considering the circumstances we were in. Haha the potato salad that wasnt cold anymore and the pasta that wasnt hot. But all in all it was a good meal :) Thanks for the times and memories and everything, greatly appreciated (: Love you guys loads!

Another happening double reeds section outing, this time at Melvados cafe (the two indian guys there were very nice and gave us 10% off in exchange for 2 slices of very nice chocolate banana cake we gave them). And Elissa is so excited at receiving her card that she can't stop reading it..

Too bad Jia Hao couldn't make it this time. Well there's always the next time where we will hopefully try to shed the kilos instead of always gaining them, right Daniel? :P

this time last year, i think the only thing i could play was "when the saints go marching in"

I just really wanna thank my batch for this awesome opportunity.. to be part of a band so strong. this time last year, i barely knew you guys. but my (AWESOME) saxtion got me a cake anyway, and the whole band celebrated my birthday for me. thank you thank you thank you so much (:

it's been one year already. and i'm so thankful to the saxtion for helping me learn this amazing instrument, for the words of encouragement and the great patience. heh.

the concert was the best experience of my life. i just can't imagine anything better. whatsoever things... i'm just so so proud to have been a part of it.

As a newbie, i think i am so so lucky to have been part of this batch. i really loved my time in band. i'm so glad i joined (:

thank you for the all the joy and all the amazement.

so that when we come back and revisit the blog, we revisit the memories of SAJCCB 2008.

Both nights were magical.

Of course to the j2s, Saints E Muzica was smthg they will die remembering.

and to me, the performance at Taka was something i will die remembering.

the not so perfect pieces we played, yet i know we played with our hearts.

there are definitely rooms to improve, and we will strive to work as hard.

beautiful "Twins", as i see a line of hope.

the line formed by the j2s at the encore song, to me it was hope, it was expectations, it was encouragement, it was pride.

Thank you J2s, for being there to support us. There is nothing i can ask for, more.

hey there!
my first time blogging here
and yes,
finally someone to represent the clarinet section of batch 07/08

concert's over (abit late to say this i know)
and im still pretty much in my post-concert euphoria
i would say i wont trade anything in my life for that experience that i had with the band
EVER.
the day we all played whatsoeverthings.
the experience we felt in our hearts.
and the heart.
thats where it all lies
and thats where the music came from.
who can forget the applause that came after the piece?
one which was prolonged
and even grew louder for some reason

i'd like to say..
that the musical journey for the batch didnt end with a full stop.
it ended with a trail of exclamation marks

I will never forget today, 22nd May '08.

Twins was amazing when we played it for the j2s. Although we might not have sound good enough, but the feeling was all there, I could feel it.

That feeling made me cry, for the first time ever in my entire band life.

Just like what siying quoted bean, "forget any negativity or fear on stage and just play with your heart".

"Play with your heart", that's what we did during twins i felt.

I really wanna thank the j2s for walking through this short but great path with us!

Finally, the day has arrived for SAJC Band to showcase their effort and hardwork over the past many months, and indeed I'm very proud of you - you've not only proven yourselves what other people might not be able to accomplish, but most importantly what SAJC Band is all about.

Forget about the little hiccups that happened on stage for what is important was that everyone managed to piece up again together as one band and continued the show - commendable.

Forget about the one whom may have caused the errors on stage, for what is important was that it was at least a humane performance that everyone will remember - not for the mistakes, but for the time spent on stage together - forgivable.

Forget about the musical issues that may have already happened in the music, for what is important was that everyone felt satisfied and congratulate each other for the moving music on stage- memorable.

Thank you for the wonderful performance. Well done.

halo the present sajc concert band, addison here ar... batch 04/05..

i'm proud to say tt i was there at vch on the 180508 to watch sajc concert band perform!

for me, it was a very! touching performance...

in a way, u guys fulfilled the dreams of what some of the past batches had dreamed of...the beautiful sound, the musical, the kind of music u performed...

amazing...many have already said it but i will say it again, whatsoever things was so so beautiful...Mr Glosz brought it out when i was j1 but yea...hahaha we weren't ready for such a piece...finally, i believe he has found the unique batch with the unique sound to really bring out the beauty of this piece...although another band under him did play it before...

the musical reminded me of so many fond memories when i was j1...
how i teared at the very first note we played during the start of the musical, which drew a roar of applause from the audience...
n how they laughed at gorizilla? when he was blabbering in his own 'language'...
the music which was played during the musical, noah's ark, persis, merry widow...all brought back different memories...
n also the song 'at the beginning' which reminds me of xiao han n malorie...
n of cos, the ending...haha so so similar compared to the first musical...hahaha

lastly, i would like to thank each n everyone of u 07/08 batch peeps, for all ur sacrifice, the effort n everything tt u've put into this concert n from the very first day tt u were a part of this family...thank you thank you so very the much...hahah

IT'S OVER! Hah I must really say that the experience last night was really a special one. Though the concert didnt start on a right note, it ended off with a bang! WHAO! Whatsoever Things!!! What a wonderful feeling to play with all your heart and being able to 'feel' when u play. The moments immediately after Whatsoever Thing were really touching. People crying, shaking hands, hugging on stage. All the emotion, almost the whole batch crying. Hah this is really an experience everyone should aim for man! To play till you cry. HAH.

THE MUSICAL! I would say that it was a success! Many thanks to all involved, which is the entire band of course. Every part played an important role in its execution. What can i say man, we worked as a team and we did it! All the effort we put in, the late nights practicing for musical band, acting, building props, costumes, doorgifts. The scares we all hand from our 2 "paikah" leads. One with the toe and the other limping the day before the concert! Whatever it is, the experience was really a great one, one that i would treasure and remember.

so band camp is just about over.
i'm personally disappointed with myself because the huge kerfuffle my toe has caused meant that i had to go home at night, couldn't play soccer/captn's ball with everyone/ act properly.

so generally,
i felt very detached from the band during this camp.
this last camp.

but well.
we live and we learn.
this whole incident made me treasure every single moment and every blessing so much more.

i want to thank joshua, james, benny, jeremy, syarah, ruiqi in particular for helping me out the most while im moving at the speed of light these days and everything.

and i want to apologize to the cast because my immobility means that i can't move around and be acting like how i should be, especially when we have just about 2 weeks left. i'm proud of you guys for being patient and applying mr g's comments during last night's rehearsal.

and to the couples who were about to drop dead any moment by 11 plus last night, you guys deserve a break. your dancing has really improved so much considering how late you guys learnt the routine. practice hard but don't break any toes perchance kthx.

and seriously to everyone in this band,
if someone says,
"you can do it (insert name)! break a leg for the musical! (i.e good luck)"

grab one of my crutches and stuff it down their throats immediately!

they have been used for all sorts of purposes anyway, like how:
1) mr g has thrown it up about 2.5 floors thinking it is a mace,
2) benny and daryl has used it for a paralympic race on the track which lasted about 15 cm before deciding it is not very fun,
3) syarah has used it to feel the momentum of physics swinging forward and backwards which is apparently the biggest adventure on earth,
4) and syafiq and eric has decided it would be the most appropriate and exciting prop to be used for the musical.

Band Camp!

Hey guys tomorrow is the start of our band camp and I hope that y'all are looking forward to it as much as I am! Band camp is a time for us to focus on our music and preparations for upcoming events such as concerts or syf but it is also a great time to bond and get to know each other better. For my batchmates, this would be our final band camp in our time in sajc and perhaps even in our lives, so I'm hoping we can all really enjoy ourselves in the next 3 days.

You know as 18 may draws nearer and as the number of rehearsals decrease, I just can't help but look back and reminiscence on all the great times we had in this band. From My First Concert and our beauty and the beast, to Bach to the Beat, to SYF, to New Zealand, to Navy Open House, to our Band CIP, to our Learning Journey to the Newater plant, to Band Orientation etc, this journey has really been tremendous for me. And I'm sure like most of us, we are all getting more sentimental as we approach our 'expiry' date. The thought of not coming down to the band room (which has been my second home) for practice anymore seems unthinkable, but it's unfortunate that all good things have to come to an end.

As band camp commences in less than 24 hours time, let's all treasure the time we have together during the camp. Let us for the next 3 days forget all the controversy and just focus enjoying making the music that sajc is known for. When the rehearsals get long and tiring and when 'he' decides to PMS, let our music and camaraderie be the invigorating force that drives us on.

More than anything, I just want this camp to be one that all of us, both J1 and J2, will remember and cherish.

Honestly speaking, i am proud to tell people i am in SAJC band. because the seniors, they have done such a great job in lifting the band's name up and up. I just want to say, to point out that the j2s, especially those in my section, you are aspiration, my motivation to work even harder. I've never loved band, not in my secondary school cos i hated marching. But after i came here, it was tough to catch up, to stay positive, but the fruits of it are my love for music, for band.

I had spent days thinking, how am i gonna survive? Its disheartening to have learnt the instrument for 4 years and end up realising your techniques were all screwed.

but when i see the j2s, the standard of music you guys give, the 100% hearts you guys put in, it occurs to me that i have to work hard, and i can improve.

and i will remember every part of being in this band, for the rest of the 1 year i have here, i will work hard. i know we all will!

and my admiration; due to all the J2s. every single one of you, have shown me what is putting in your heart and soul.

Hey J1s!

Mr Glz have selected the piece entitled "Selections from Westside Story" for us to perform at the upcoming concert. This is definitely not what i've expected it to be, since he didnt reply me when i asked him about it earlier this week plus i've already handed out instructions for American Riversong to be photocopied so that we can practice next week before band camp but it looks like i've got to scrap that plan. On top of that, i received the msg only after i left alumni rehearsal and that sms specifically stated that the piece can be obtained from sps library. Well it seems like i've got to make arrangements again to get those scores hahaha. And when i finally get my hands on that piece, i hope that we all can start working on it because band camp is approaching fast! Its only about 6 days to band camp man!

Anyway, this is also my first time blogging on the band's blog. There are certain things that i will want to talk about. Firstly, "my first concert" was not as bad as what we all thought it would be. Yes, there were mistakes in our playing and flaws in the organisation that day. But most importantly, that one thing we did right was to enjoy ourselves during our performance, which most of us did. I believe that despite all the mistakes we make on stage during "my first concert" we will learn and not repeat them in the future. "My first concert" also marks the beginning of our journey in this band. It will be gd for all of us to set aside any differences in the past as this is a new start. Ahead of us lies many more obstacles that we as one batch will have to overcome them together. I cannot emphasis enough that our success will have to be mainly built around teamwork and unity. So I urge all of us to be more tolerant of each other and support each other throughout our time in this band. Also, when necessary bring up any problems you may have so that we all can be there for each other and together solve those problems quickly too.

Hey everyone..

This is my first time blogging EVER believe it or not. But thats not the issue so stop laughing! Idiots. OK! Im writing this because with the coming musical and the J2s stepping down after that i've begun to feel a little nostalgic and sentimental already. And to worsen things, that day when i was clearing my com, i opened this folder with all the NZ trip's details and stuff in there. It just flooded me with memories and got me thinking about how much band has meant to me over the past 6 years. And im sure it really means alot to you guys too..

So firstly, to the J2s, its all coming to an end soon and i really thank you guys for all the experiences this past year. But before we go, lets put our mark in SAJCCB's histroy! Just keep in mind the agreement we had to go all the way and keep practicing! And if you ever need inspiration, think of the whatsoever things we played that day. Everyone had freakin goosebumps la. Its like what some of you said, whatsoever things was made for our batch.. So lets play it with all the emotions in our hearts and with freakin tears in our eyes. Cause its OURS k? And when we leave this band and look back on it, we'll be able to say that that performance, that one single piece filled with our feelings and sentiments and soul, just the memory of it is enough to pull us through whatever shit we may be in. Cause we were great and we'll always be great.

And to the J1s, you'll be free of the J2s in about a month's time, free to choose your own future and to leave your very own mark. So take it from me ok? The sooner you guys throw away your reservations and really start to bond together as a batch, the better! Cause the time you have in this band is really short (only a yr+) and its best if you cherish it. Just be proactive in the band and love the band, and enjoy all your band activites, performances, your band trip and whatever else there is to the full. I'm sure you guys will do your seniors proud and be a fantastic batch.

Yup thats all I wanted to say. I never thought that i'll leave the band but i guess we all have to grow up eh? And everything i've written, is not written as a leader of the band but in the spirit of a true band member. Lets all work hard together, and give the performance of our lives!

LIFE CONCERT 2008 (ALIVE) ROCKED!!
i mean, though the concert wasn't as good as last year's,we still danced/sang enthusiastically!!
the lightings were damn nice!!and gave the CC a wonderful cool look.hehehe.
most of us was kinda high..and think everyone screamed till we lost our voice??haha..
but it was worth it.seeing everyone singing together and praising God together was totally cool (:
but, i think not alot of bandits went right??i like only saw maybe 20 of us???hmmm..
i was wishing/expecting more people to go but,oh well..
so in the end everyone went home feeling tired and wondering how to wake up tmr morning for band..hahaha.

oh.the band is turning itself into a fitness club, running every morning 8pm before band.so those who wish to join?just tell jianhui or just come down at 8.running as a whole band sounds quite cool (:

just felt like i had to give my input.
haha. just wanted to say that I wish all the j1 newbies all the BEST! haha. I was a newbie last year you know you know?! haha. mandy and I used to sit together practising our squeaking techniques or something. and don't need to get too disheartened over anything really. I remember when we joined main band, warm ups were just a disaster. haha! (and I only recently discovered what quavers and all those things were, to be honest :D)
I'm pleased that Mandy and I aren't the only ones who want to learn new things and experience new, er, experiences. band has been so enriching for me! I never want to give saxophone up, even though people may still think I'm some noob or something (:

for it to be succesful, the key is to be familiar.
that means everyone,
the band, the actors, the backstage crew, the lighting crew,
everyone.
has to know exactly what will happen, or what to do.

if you think you have a fairly small part, maybe as calafare,
and you think you are insignificant,
then you are wrong,
because if even one person fails to fulfill his/her role,
then the whole band will be dragged down.
and that is really unfair and selfish.
lets not taint the legacy of the band with selfish behaviour.

everyone matters and everyone plays an important part.
so lets practicepracticepractice till we get it right,
till we have no more glitches,
till we are confident.
because we owe it to ourselves to make this concert great.

on a lighter note,
i think its pretty ironic that we're playing
at the beginning as the final piece of the concert,
the final piece of our sajc band careers.
but it sure holds sentimental value,
what with benny being the arranger and all.

i felt that we did well in the saints in concert but could have done better?could have more heart and soul in our playing?but the concert's alr over right?what we are embarking on is a journey towards the SAINTS E MUZICA!so maybe lets just concentrate totally on OUR SAJCBAND concert now?we all know that the concert pieces are musically challenged and naturally, we have to do more self prac.but also, other than self prac, we have to listen out to each other as a band.every little sound in the band matches together to form one sound, one band, SAJCconcertBAND, a family (: but still, that only fulfills the music part and not the heart and soul of the piece/band.i think each and everyone of us have to break our own barriers and get to know every single bandit in the band.though this family is big now, we still can unite it together into a big cosy family!!

'Words from the Bandmaster'

Hey guys, this is Jeremy once again.

Anyway just wanted to post the foreword that Mr Glosz wrote for the 'One Family, One Flag' concert. Hopefully it would give a few insights regarding the history of SAJC band and its relationship with SASMB.

"The theme for this concert 'One Family, One Flag' has great meaning not only for what will happen on stage tonight but for a relationship that began sixteen years ago.

In 1987, I began my relationship with St Andrew's Junior College. I was invited to conduct the college band by then principal Rev. John Tan. Three years passed when I was informed by an old boy in the junior college that the secondary school needed assistance and was looking for a conductor to instruct the secondary school band. I applied even after hearing that the principal Mr. Harry Tan was very tough and may not be supportive.

I was very nervous at our first meeting. The first question he asked me was "why do you want to come and conduct my boys?" I explained that I was already conducting the college band and it would be a good idea to collaborate with the junior college and develop a musical link between the schools. Not long after that, Mrs Charles became principal of the college and the results thereafter speak for themselves.

The college and secondary school bands have done extremely well at festivals and competitions but if not for the sharing of organisation, facilities and the shared attitudes from senior to junior, the results of the program would not have come that easily. Once the link was established, the relationship between the bands and the schools grew stronger. We have organised joint concerts, camps, tours and mentoring sessions with the alumni band members, and this has extended into the junior school band which was established in 2005. The former divide between Potong Pasir and Malan Road is now a thing of the past.

I would like to express a collective thanks to Mr Tan Soo Kiang, Mrs Lim Chye Tin, Mrs Belinda Charles and Mrs Pryke Wai Yin for their continued support of the relationship and to Rev John Tan, Mr Harry Tan and Mdm Jacqueline Oehlers for the initial development of the band music program in the 'Family of Saints'

The missing element

Maybe from the start of the yr,we have lost the desire to achieve music excellence. For a band with a strength of 75, it's actually quite sad to see only the same old grp of people coming down for individuals. N they dun amt to 10.

The school culture has changed,no doubt it has. More emphasis has been placed on academics and there were follow-up actions. But i think the main focus here is still balance. The delicate balance between academics n CCA. It is tough n tiring to maintain this balance,no one ever said it is easy. U may even feel like giving up half-way, but the question is, is this really ur limit?

The beauty of music lies in its ability to express self. It connects u n e rest. When u r on the stage,performing, what actually do u hope to achieve? Perfection? The answer differs for each individual. But i remembered someone, a senior from SAJC Concert Band, telling me that for each concert, he plays for his batchmates, for his band, to thank them for all the memorable times they had together. Sometimes i wonder, can a batch with members who have average playing abilities but are bonded as one, produce better music than one with the reverse? The answer is unknown, but i believe the former will be able to touch the audience's hearts better.

Unity, Family bonds are all over-used words. So is music excellence. The ultimate decision lies in ur hands--what u want your band journey to be?

REFLECTIONS - PART II

After leaving the stage last night, I started to wonder if we as a band accomplished the aim of the SAJC Concert Band which is to enjoy music making and achieving musical excellence in the process. Well, I must say that we certainly enjoyed the sounds that we hear and make on stage, the same can certainly not be said about the latter. To the ordinary audience, we may have sounded fantastic with great tone. But whats a great tone without soul and excitement in the music. Music revolves around excitement, attitudes and character; without which we have not accomplished the essence of music.

Last night, while playing on stage i could feel the band lacking in heart. It felt weird as though something was missing from our playing. Just like Jeremy, I feel extremely proud and honoured to have performed with the different bands in the saints family. But somehow, yesterday the sense of unity, teamwork and camaraderie did not show. Maybe it was the approach towards this concert. It might have been a rushed job, but i felt that we could still do way better than what we've achieved. While leaving the stage, I cannot but feel a tinge of disappointment in me on the concert as a whole. Ordinary band members from other bands may have felt like whoa, SAJC were great, fantastic, superb, awesome, and what not. But as members of SAJC CONCERT BAND, we must accpet nothing but the best. We all know, last night's performance wasnt the greatest ever and we still have plenty of room for improvement. There were plenty of little imperfections everywhere, tuning issues, intonation, dynamics, tempo, entry issues blah blah blah. Well, what's done is done. The only thing we can do now is to iron out this little issues and to achieve greater excellence in our playing. Yeah, you may say okay this is simple we'll working things out eventually, but this cannot be achieved individually. To achieve excellence, every single band member has to contribute. Thus i hope that everyone in the band can share this identical goal and work towards it together.

31st March Concert

Having been thru the two concerts 2006 and 2008, i do agree that the feeling was different. One of the reasons was really the preparation time given. The Esplanade Concert in 2006 was prepared one yr in advance, ie when the booking was confirmed in 2005 Aug, preparation started then. We had 3 production meetings with Esplanade Committee n Mr Glosz. I would say more effort was put in the 2006 concert to really realise the belief of "One Family, One Flag". Just the opening piece itself, we had a number of rehearsals. It was meant to be n it was. I dun think there will be another concert like "One Family, One Flag".Maybe that's y it lives in the hearts of those who were a part of it. It's our pride :)

N i'm glad it did,cos at least when the Saints graduated, they had something to remember in their 2 yrs journey in SAJC. Everytime i flipped thru the photos taken during that concert, my heart swelled with pride. Yes, Jeremy was right. every band was unique, but they worked together as one,no matter how tired they were.Everyone felt a sense of satisfaction n pride when they left the stage of Esplanade Concert Hall in 2006 cos they knew they had left behind a legacy, they had accomplished what they set out for. At least that was what i felt among my band members then.

Saints in Concert was like a puzzle, everyone trying to find a piece to complete the puzzle. We knew what was the missing piece but we could not put it in. Although the bulk of the puzzle was made up by the JCians,but i believe this concert had strengthened the bond among the boys in SAS.

We all know that it was not a perfect concert, but from another perspective, we hope it would be a concert that witnessed the fruits of labour. It was a heart-warming feeling to see the seniors beaming with pride when the juniors cleared certain parts of Legend.

There is bonding, there is a family. It may not be evident across schools, but it is evident within the school band. Esp SAS.

The Saints in Concert - Reflections

After having left the Esplanade stage last night, I could not have denied that something was amiss. The usual buzz that would have overwhelmed us was absent. As we packed up and left, all that people were thinking of was what time they would reach home. Could this concert have been that insignificant? Unfortunately it may well have.

As i look back at the last time the Saints performed at the Esplanade, I can't help but feel that last night was a sad mockery of the "One Family, One Flag" concert.

Having grown up with St Andrew's all my life, I am a proud advocate of the "one family unbroken" value which St Andrew's is built upon. In 2006, the bands of SAV displayed through our music, our unparelled sense of unity and camaraderie, and it remains today as one of the proudest moments I have as a Saint as well as a bandmember. In that concert, very much like yesterday, the bands came together and combined for a few pieces. Despite each band being unique in its own way, we managed to blend together as one in harmony. However this time round, there was no significance as the bands combined to perform with each other. The purpose for combining in 2006 was to signify the bonds between the schools and bands. This year it was merely done to 'salvage' a show.

Although "One Family, One Flag" was a concert organised by SAJC, it was by no means SAJC's concert - it was The Saints' concert. Can any other institution boast a legacy of musical excellence and comradeship such as ours?

I am not frustrated nor angry at yesterday's performance, but i am disappointed that we did not 'keep the flame burning brightly' last night. It is concerts like these where it isn't always about the music, but the spirit. Maybe it was because of the concert's timing and maybe because the bands weren't as bonded as in the past (Bribane 2005) that led to the outcome of yesterday's concert, but it is still sad nonetheless to know how far it has degraded.

I cannot emphasize enough how much pride I take in our bands being able to boast of this family quality, for besides the music, this is what I'd remember most after I leave this band and school one day. To my batchmates, we have about 7 weeks left before we step down, which equates to around 21 practices left together. It is my utmost wish that though we have joined the band as bandmembers, we leave together as one family.

hello everyone, i'm back again. oh well now that block test has ended, its time to get back our results. haha what can i say mann, different people, different stories. to those who did well, congrats! :) hope you guys keep up the good work and continue pushing till the big A's. to those who didnt meet their targets (unfortunately, i'm one of them), continue to put in the consistent work and we would surely reap the rewards SOMEDAY! hopefully its during A's la.

so anyway, band prac tmr! i know everyone has been really tired with sch + band, but just persevere on, knowing that all the effort we put in will not go to waste. so enjoy the romantic band prac under the stars tmr at the track! haha and lets make use of our time during band prac constructive so that we can enjoy what we do and be satisfied at the end of the day!

band has been pretty intense for the past 3 days,
reaching home just enough for about
8 hours before leaving for school again.

reminds me of syf,
and walking across the sas bridge with our instruments in the dead of night
yet still having 293489384 minutes of debrief
and then having a daily inner conflict of
"OMG NO NEED TO GO SCHOOL TODAY PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE"
every forsaken morning.

so the point is,
what we do is tough.

if the school thinks that team sajc has it tough,
sajc concert band has it just as tough, or tougher.

so suck it all in,
stop laughing at benny's low-leveled humour jokes (seriously)
and if you need to let anything out,
let it be through your intruments.

11 more days to first rehearsal at VCH.
let it be effective.

Having come back from our esplanade rehearsal today and realising how little time we have to accomplish so many things, some of us might be feeling stressed and worried about how things will turn out. However, let us not dread about the esplanade concert or musical, but rather look forward to it. Sure we got our work cut out for us, but i hope all of us can start to enjoy this process of preparation and get more bonded as a band as a result.

As we come together for rehearsals, let us ENJOY making music together as a band. Like the saying goes, "find a job you love and you'll never work again." I hope there won't be anyone 'working' in band.

Yoz everyone! well, today is the first band prac after BT 1. :D and i felt that we did well today! *cheers* i could feel the positive vibes coming for everyone and it really showed in the music today. indiana jones, post cards and beatles. i hope this positive feeling continue even as we press ahead towards our concert/musical and also the esplanade concert coming up next week. as we move on, there would surely be obstacles along the way BUT! we must work together for the people around us, the music and most importantly SAJC CONCERT BAND. and, i hope the revival of our blog would continue! :D CHEERS EVERYONE!

Congratulations to Batch 2006

I'm very proud of each n eveyone of u, not only cos ur batch has produced 2 top scholars but it is also the batch with 100% pass, meaning everyone has a full cert, no "U". This is the best set of results ever witnessed in 6 yrs. Thank you all for your hard work!! I'm so happy that at least for one batch, i really witnessed everyone leaving JC with a full cert, as i had often said it should be the main goal in ur JC education. The pride i felt was even greater than u achieving SYF GOld with Honours!!

I wonder when u received ur results, did u ever think how u had actually survived the 2 yrs? I still vividly remembered the long Sat prac u had, 8-10 coaching newbies,10-1pm sectionals,2-4pm full band. Sectionals starting at 5pm on non-band days. Intensive rehearsals almost everyday as SYF approached, the evening prac on the track,late rehearsals in SAS bandroom,falling asleep in class, nothing was on ur mind except band, how badly u performed for BT1..... The list goes on. N u have survived the test, the trials n difficulties. U had overcome the greatest obstacle in ur education n will move on to gates of freedom.

U have done well not only academically, but u have,along the way, built ur character, becoming fine young men and ladies.

To my batch of 2006, your juniors are very proud of you.

For those who think you have not done well, do not despair. Face the destiny with courage and not fear. Open your hearts and minds and you will see the turn at the corner, not the dead end, for this is not the end but just the beginning of your life ahead. Explore the unknown with courage, u will not be alone. We will be there for you.

One Sound We Make,One Beat We Create

If my memory does not fail me, this blog was created by Kok Hoe's batch. I have always believed that it is the efforts of many members that results in the survival of this blog.

Browsing thru this blog,i realised that the entries had stopped with the 2007 batch. N i doubt it will continue with the 2008 batch.

As i compare the culture of the band 6 yrs ago n now, I discovered we have lost the following:
1) the passing down piece:Twins
2) our band table
3) our blog
4) our family

I still remember very vividly how the batch of 2002-2003 cried while they played Twins for their juniors. How this piece was passed down from batches to batches. I dun deny that i have an emotional attachment to this piece.

The band table. Remember how the "need to balance" come abt for the 2005 batch? Remember the cute Winnie the Pooh drawn by Jojo on the band table? How we succeed in smuggling the band table to Potong Pasir only to be asked to send it back to Malan Road? I believe we all know how much this means to us.

Our blog. A white elephant?

Our Family. No longer in existence. I was very disappointed when one current band member told me "what family? Stop lying to yourself."

Things that i had believed in, things that i hold so dear, are all gone. Sometimes i wonder what is there left for me to hold on to. Often students find me living in the past memories,n i just can't help it. Band,nowadays, is just like being with hi-bye people. They have destroyed the culture but did not create one.

Whenever i want to justify that i have made the right decision to stay on, the only thing i can turn to is the things given to me by the previous batches.

My love is still with them, but to them, it is really not worth a thing.

i know i'm a little late. but happy new year! hope you all had a good time staying up and welcoming the arrival of the year of the rat. maybe you had watch night service, or some gathering at somebody's place, or maybe you even watched ratatouille all alone...
but i'm sure you guys had fun. which is good. which is very good actually. ok i don't know what i'm talking about here but it's okay right. cos i know you all miss me and you're bursting with joy just reading my nonsense.

anywayssss. i'm hungry.
but i digress.

i feel for those who have already gone into army. poor thing, funny spectacles and no hair. is it colder? well. with global warming at all that rubbish it's good that you guys won't have to use as much shampoo as the rest of us. somemore now even shampoo getting so expensive. all the best to the rest of you who have yet to enlist anw. :)

guys have it better than girls in some ways you know. not only do we have to go job hunting while you guys have your income (or allowance, whatever) secured, we also have to cope with the adult bus fare. and LONELINESS. :'( hahaha. the workplace gets dreary at times.
okay i admit the physical training is also bleh/torturous etc. but you're getting more fit. while we are getting fat! (i hope i'm not alone on this or else it's damn embarrassing.)
YES. i'm putting on weight. i thought i'd never ever get fat. but boohooo.

now let me try to link this back to band life so my post won't be deemed irrelevant by some of you critics.

j2s! haha. you guys have probably been through a fair bit, representing sajcband as batch'07-08. the memories you have forged together, and the lessons learnt from experiences.. it's my hope that they have in some way contributed to the growth of all of you as individuals and as a band. and i believe that you're now more than sufficiently prepared to mentor and nurture the new j1s as they begin a new chapter of their lives, and as you move on to yet another stage of this part of your lives.
i know differences and rifts are unavoidable in any band, or in any organisation actually. but what makes any experience worthwhile and satisfying is how these things mould you, and how you learn to react to things more positively and constructively. how you find true friendships in ur jc life and whether you've succeded in finding joy while being a blessing in the lives of others, rather than making your own self happy. or you know la, what i'm getting at. i hope. haha.

i don't mean to sound presumptuous or anything. but as a (kind caring and sweet) senior of course i want you all to be happy right! so yea. hope you learn from our mistakes and are somehow more prepared to face the challenges of a j2 student.

first of all, happy new year bandies!!!

yeah, so tml's the start of another brand new year. new kids, new bandies. j2s either working, NS-ing or slacking. j1s no longer j1s-u guys are now the j2s, the seniors, the ones guiding the new bandies, passing on our traditions, our culture, our ways. which brings me to my point. this blog.

it saddens me to see that so far, none of the j1s have really used this blog. it has been around for around 3 years now, something started by our ex-seniors, yes, who are ppl many in the band may not have known though. but they started something which they hoped to be passed down, from batch to batch. someone has to start it, and they did, and now, after just 3 batches, its stagnant. and i mean really stagnant. look at the intervals between the entries. if u have the time, look back at past entries. even if u're not a member, u can still feel the spirit of the band from them. i know its too powerful a word, but now, the blog's fading away..

the one time the blog actually really faded, when someone deleted it, everybody, from non sajccb bandies to members to alumni were suddenly concerned abt it, asking each other what exactly happened, who did it, can it be retrieved back. and not wanting to lose a part of our band history, a few j2s investigated and tried to retrieve it, and eventually succeeded. and here u are reading it, the sajc band blog. a record of sajc band life, the sweat, blood, and sweetness of 3 batches.

and while alumni of cos are more than welcome to write entries, they cant be the ones keeping the blog going..

of cos, not expecting ppl to start writing essays here from now on, but some things, serious or even nonsensical here and there would be nice. im sure no one needs a lesson on how to blog right..

so yup, soon-to-be j2s. keep this blog going, alright guys?

kudos to daniel's arm.
for ur info, the bugger (as said by eugene) injured his arm at home.
apparently, he slipped and fell in his own toilet and blamed his sis for wetting the floor, thus causing the injury.
oh well. but we dont blame him for being so clumsy. =)

In another shameless hijack of the band blog, let me present to you a poem dedicated to all the students who have suffered and will suffer through our thoroughly delightful and rigourous education system. It is still very much a work in progress, so I would appreciate any and all comments. Let me present to you:

The A Levels are Over!!!

Well, sort of, any way. Most of us should have only one or two papers left now. What a wonderful feeling, to be able to sleep in late without having to face a paper later in the day. But I digress. The SAJC Open House is this saturday, and I think most of us are going back to suppport our juniors and see how far they've come. Come to think of it, it's been ages since we last performed together as a batch (okay, it was in May, but that's not the point). The sense of camaderie and unity of playing in a band, under one conductor...wouldn't you like to experience it again?

Yeah. So, in a shameless plug for the SAB, the alumni band is currently recruiting players for its concert on the 27th of January 2008. And need I add, the alumni band really, seriously, needs players for this project. The majority of the J2 guys who would have otherwise performed are, unfortunately, headed off to the army before the concert starts. In particular, the alumni band needs clarinetists, cornetists, trombonists, and tubists; our rehearsals have been rather empty of late due to the distinct lack of a baseline. Practices are on saturdays, 6.30 pm (i.e., starting at 7), to around 10, latest. We would dearly love to see more of you there; J1s will only be asked to performed if there is no other choice, seeing that this is an alumni band and not SAJC band + Alumni. One family, one passion - your music days in the band are just beginning. Join the alumni band.

P.S I'm doing this of my own volition, and have not been coerced by the alumni Ex-Co in any fashion whatsoever. Whatever its faults, the alumni band deserves its share of credit for reuniting the various batche and allowing them to express their passion for music. It would be a pity if this tradition was to be discontinued.

alright man. i'm back again. guess i'm really excited abt today (11/10).

1stly, its our J2s farewell.

nxt. we received wonderful and manly news that ppl are enlisting in early. dont u think thats worth celebrating? cos our guys can become MAN.
and i mean.

so here's what i know. hope u MANs dont mind it.

on the 15th of DECEMBER.
our wonderful clarinet SL(not the female one) NICKY and of cos ur beloved me are entering tekkkkkkkkkong. so do come alright..
-quite sad right. no xmas hols. zzz. this yr jingle no more bells alr. no more merry xmas. ok whatever lets move on.

nxt up. i think its the 9th of JANUARY.
we have yiiiiisiong and braaaaaaaaanddddddon hengg enlisting in. quite cool ar. so once again. do go and visit them. maybe someone like brandon-sao can organise this farewell to our beloved MAN.

oh well. its been nearly 2 months since anyone last blogged.

the last time anyone blogged, it was the nation's bday lar. haha. so i guess its REALLY REALLY LONG.

time flies man. in 3 weeks time. YES 3 WEEKS 3 WEEKS!!!!!
we're gonna have our As. no more flunking. no more fooling around.

who cares abt 2 papers within a day. just make sure u prepare right now! and dont complain any shit man.

be super confident of what u're writing and never look back man. even if its an error, just smoke it lar! i'm sure we're well equipped in all aspects of our life to employ this tactic anywhere else.
